Bethany & Jason - Engaged! |

B ethany & Jason are getting married THIS October 30 in Sylvania, Ohio (near Toledo), and I get the distinct honor of being flown in from Philadelphia to photograph it... as if having them drive 12 hours each way to have their engagement session in Lake Placid (one of their favorite places) wasn't enough of an honor! :-) I first met Bethany five years ago (almost exactly) at our dear friends' wedding. She was a bridesmaid, and Chris was the best man (of course, she and Chris go back before I was even a name on Chris' lips). Anyway, I couldn't be more excited about their upcoming wedding. As an art teacher, I know Bethany has excellent taste and a great eye for design. I am sure that is will be stunning. But, for now... the engagement portraits! Happy viewing, friends! |

two words Jason loves to hear "Ubu Ale"

it has been raining for almost 36 hours straight. we lucked out!

i love couples that can make each other laugh.

so, we got a lil hungry and stopped for a sandwich (no we didn't, but would've been a good story, right?)

Bethany spotted this door... she said she loved it. I guess so; her shirt matches it PERFECTLY!

they wanted a few even more casual pics in a more natural setting, so we went from downtown to John Brown Farm. Love how crystal clear the pond is.

Bethany, you are going to be a beautiful bride!

Thanks again for driving all this way, and then... TREATING me to dinner! You guys are great!

Megan & Daniel - Chestnut Hill Portraits |

Y esterday, I met up with Megan and Daniel at Cake in Chestnut Hill, and the excitement for this shoot was at an (almost) all time high. See, I first heard from Megan a few years ago. She had seen some images I had captured for her coworker at the Mirror Lake Inn in Lake Placid. She so wanted some "Rae Barnes Portraits" of her own, but the timing just wasn't right in 2008 for it to work for us. So, we both waited. Since then, she has moved from Lake Placid, NY to Raleigh, NC and now to Baltimore, MD AND she has fallen in love. So, we connected. And, now that she is only 2-3 hours away from me, we made it happen. As soon as I book a client, I ask them to fill out a quick questionnaire, just to know what I am working with. One of the last questions I ask is "what led you to find and book (me) as your photographer?" I HAVE to share her answer just because it made my week. :-)
"You can't live in/around Lake Placid without hearing about the fabulous Rae Barnes! Fell in love with the blog & all of the gorgeous photos (and clients)! While working at the Mirror Lake Inn, Jamie had little baby Sophie's pictures done, and I probably showed everyone how wonderful the pictures captured her. Your pictures seem to capture little moments that I haven't seen with other photographers, and it seems effortless and natural. (Not into super posey photographers.) So incredibly happy to be able to (finally) work with you!!!"
Thanks so much, Megan... and Daniel! You guys are so great together, and I look forward to milestones down the road... and only hope that I can have the honor of photographing you again and again. Happy viewing, friends!
Cake is such a cool building! |

usually, i don't love it when couples do this and hide their faces from me, but there is something about this spot and this moment combined that i love.

Robertson's Florist is located next-door to Cake (they are actually attached and Cake has tons of flowers and plants all over- like a greenhouse). Beautiful spot!

oh... and beautiful moments! Megan has a great laugh.

Daniel keeps her smiling and laughing.

keeping her laughing... :-)

and a little flare after the outfit change...

we then tried to go down to Valley Green Inn to grab a few around the woods and cute lil inn, but it was ABSOLUTELY packed! the closest parking spot was too far away for Megan to walk in heels. So, we just ventured into the woods from where we parked. And, I love these last two in the creek!

Thanks so much, Megan and DANIEL! You guys are such a sweet couple!

Stacey & Chris - Engagement Portraits |

I said yesterday that the greatest compliment that a photographer can receive is repeat business, but a VERY close second to that is referral business. I have not purchased an ad anywhere in the past 3 years (I did start out with paid ads the first few years) because I firmly believe that I should invest that back into making my clients happy and wowed (at least to the best of my ability). At any rate, I met up with Stacey & Chris yesterday in Valley Forge. Stacey was a bridesmaid for Brittani & Kyle's wedding back in July of 2008 (she is in TWO of the images on their preview). I know that Brittani still frequents my site, and even though I haven't photographed her since she "trashed" her dress in October 2008, I am so thankful for her and Kyle and their continued support. And, I am so excited that I got the opportunity and honor to photograph Stacey & Chris for their engagement portraits. They are such a sweet couple, and I had such a great time. Happy viewing, friends!
we met up a little later than I usually do shoots in order to avoid traffic (last time I drove this 18 mile path, it took me an hour each way- boo!)... but, the benefit, in addition to missing traffic, is the buttery light. love it! |

love tall grass. hate the ticks that usually come with it here, though!

oh, wait, i love this one, too. so very much!

Stacey & Chris both have great smiles!

we headed over to a stone chapel for a few... we ran into a HUGE crowd for a concert of their bells, so we had to tuck away for a few.

they know how to laugh together.

since the front of the church was packed, we crossed the road for a few.

Stacey was smiling ear to ear in every image, which i loved, but i managed to get one or two (towards the end) with a softer look. fiercely beautiful!

oh wait, these last two are my favorites!!

Thanks again, Stacey & Chris... and Brittani & Kyle!

Beth & Jason - Newlywed Portraits |

I have "known" Beth for a little while... I photographed her sister Meagan's wedding in 2008 and then photographed her family this past winter. Beth & Jason got married in Jamaica in March. Unfortunately, it didn't fit in the budget for me to fly there to photograph their special, but fortunately, they still wanted some of my handiwork for their walls to commemorate this special time in their lives as newlyweds. So, on Friday, we met at the Mirror Lake Inn... Side note: we did have to request permission to shoot here, as they usually do not allow photography on their grounds. Their gardens are so meticulously kept, I was super excited to do another shoot here! ... I seriously don't think a couple could be happier than they are right now. Blissfully wed! And, I am thrilled and honored that I got to capture their love for them as they start out their lives together as husband and wife. Happy viewing, friends!
|

this is my favorite. i love the light so perfectly hitting the water behind them!

they did a quick change for images in their wedding attire...

and one of the magnificent view at the top of the hill to close the shoot...

Thanks so much, guys, and CONGRATS again!!

Angie & Daniel - Engagement Portraits |

M y baby brother is getting married... THIS October 16! I still remember playing Barbies & GI-Joes with him on the stairs in our childhood home... I remember the rolly polly little (BIG) baby he was and how he would grit his teeth, scrunch his nose and pant when he got frustrated... I remember being bigger than him and being able to pin him down when he got on my nerves after HOURS of playing together... I also remember (gasp!) smoking my first (and close to my last) cigar with him on the roof of our house when we were in high school. He was easily one of my best friends growing up, and now, he has found his lifetime best friend... Angie. And, they are getting married in Asheville, NC (our hometown) in just a few months. When did we grow up and get spouses (and babies)?
I have always been super strict in my no-friends policy for weddings. Mix business and money with friends and it can (and probably will) get nasty. But, I have never had to make a policy for family... and then Daniel told me that they may not have a professional photographer since they couldn't fit a great one in their budget, and I couldn't stand for it. My side of the conversation went something like this, "Listen, if you don't hire anyone, I am going to take tons of pictures anyways and then feel like I am in the way or can't enjoy the day. Why don't we just hire a third photographer to cover the reception and the times when I just want to be your sister, and Chris and I will photograph your wedding for you?" It just felt extremely selfish of me not to offer... the thought about sitting there while NO ONE takes pictures just so that I can "enjoy the day" (as my brother told me he wanted me to do), well, it just wasn't going to work... I am passionate about what I do for a living. I think that memories get fuzzy and having quality photography to capture your most special moments in life is so important. If you don't realize that now, you will realize it in 5-10-15+ years when you are lacking them. So, fortunately, they agreed, and we are giving them photography as a gift. Hopefully, it will be their favorite gift! :-)
And the gift starts with engagement portraits in the mountains of VA (where we stayed this last weekend). Happy viewing, friends!
(the place we stayed was an old non-active vineyard) |

this is soooo Daniel... typical goof. Always good to make any and all of us laugh.

"I want a sweet one," she said. :-)

This is one GOOD-LOOKIN couple!!

we went down the street for a few... cuteness.

love this one. they obviously make each other very happy.

couldn't decide between the next two...

Angie, you are stunning. You will make one BEAUTIFUL bride!

easily my favorite (well, maybe not so easily- i like a lot of these).

Angie looks hot, and Daniel looks like he needs to scrub his feet (sorry, the sister in me had to kick in, no pun intended). ;-)

I am sure the parents will like this one...

another sweet one i love!!

Congrats! Can't wait for the big day!
